Factors that Influence the Use of School Libraries by Students at SMKN 2 Pariaman

Abstract

This research was motivated by the low use of school libraries by students at State Vocational High School 2 Pariaman. This research aims to determine how high the factors that influence the use of the school library by students at SMKN 2 Pariaman are in terms of indicators of motivation, interest in reading, library services, library collections/materials, library facilities. The type of research used is quantitative descriptive research, which has a population of 1158 students. Sampling was carried out using the Simple Random Sampling technique, the sample size was determined based on the Slovin formula and obtained a sample of 95 students. The research instrument used was a questionnaire with 35 statement items with a Likert scale model. This questionnaire has been tested on 20 students outside the sample to determine its validity and reliability using SPSS version 25. The data analysis used in this research is the Product Moment formula. From the results of data processing, it was found that the factors influencing the use of the school library by students at SMK 2 Kota Pariaman were indicators 1) student motivation with an average of 4.02 in the high category, 2) interest in reading 3.42 in the quite high category, 3) library services 3.83 in the high category, 4) collection/library materials 3.96 in the high category, 5) arrangement of library materials 4.18 in the high category, 6) library facilities 4.21 in the high category. Thus, it is concluded that the factors influencing the use of the school library by students at SMKN 2 Pariaman are in the high category with a score of 4.04. From the results obtained, the researcher suggests that students can make good use of the library and that it needs to be improved further.
